Global Education & Skills Form 2018 - Plenary Stage
The Brief
In March 2018, the Varkey Foundation conducted the 6th Global Education & Skills Forum in AtlantisThe Palm, Dubai. The theme of the conference was ‘How Do We Prepare Young People for the World of 2030 and Beyond’. The main stage was to be used for the opening and closing plenaries which contained panel discussions, keynote addresses, a brand new competition on technological innovation and finally,the 4th edition of the Global Teacher Prize, held under the patronage and attendance of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice Presidentand Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The Approach
Given that the theme of the conference was futuristic in nature, our first inspiration was to connect the stage design to Artificial Intelligence (AI). As we began exploring AI further, we learnt that one of the pioneering studies in the science revolved around enhancing ‘Synapse’ technology within AI systems. We then studied various technology frameworks and began to create our own representation of how an AI synaptic structure could be translated into a set design. Using a 3-dimensional grid coupled with special lighting technology, we created a backdrop that would showcase a networking of synapses covering the full width, height and depth of the stage backdrop.
