Global Education & Skills Form 2018 - GESF Live

The Brief

In March 2018, the Varkey Foundation conducted the 6th Global Education & Skills Forum in Atlantis The Palm, Dubai. The theme of the conference was ‘How Do We Prepare Young People for the World of 2030 and Beyond’. In addition to all the conventional formats of conferencing like plenaries, panel discussions, debates and interviews, the Varkey Foundation wanted to push the boundaries and introduce an exciting new format that would provide both educational and entertainment value to the attending delegates – this gave birth to ‘GESF LIVE’ – a Late Night TV Talk Show Format with a celebrity host and guests, coupled with anecdotes, a band – completely set inside a custom-made TV studio.

The Approach

VF’s brief was to create a TV Studio that would connect instantly (in terms of aesthetics and functionality) with audiences as a Late Night TV Talk Show. In designing the GESF Live set our immediate inspiration was to study the sets of famous Late Night shows by Letterman, Colbert, Kimmel, Fallon, Corden, etc. The elements became clear – the city backdrop, the host’s desk, the guest sofa, a monologue space, the band’s platform, the green room and audience seating. Taking into account these elements, our next step was to design and build all of this in a temporary structure within the footprint of the volleyball court at Atlantis, The Palm.
